‘Lukas’

Flowers white, single, IX-X; foliage yellow. “Habit strong, erect. Has the same characteristics as ‘Long White‘ (healthy, strong, erect growth)” but is distinguished by the bright yellow foliage; it is also clearly not the same as ‘Fortyniner Gold‘. Sport on ‘David Hagenaars‘.

Found by H. J. Kuipers in his nursery in 1998. Named after H. J. Kuipers’ son.

‘Connemara Colleen’

♤ Bud-flowerer; VIII-XI; buds solitary on very short lateral shoots; composed of 8 calyx segments, c. 4rmn long; corolla and stamens absent; ovary hirsute with shaggy hairs; style enclosed and contorted at apex; foliage more or less glabrous.

Wild-collected; found in October 2006 at Letterfrack, Cormemara, County Galway, Ireland.

‘Colleen Bawn’

Fragrant, “single” white flowers; VI-IX; anthers tan and style-end pink-tinged; flowering on principal shoots and then on axillary shoots. Foliage fresh green, hairless. Spreading plant; after 3 years to 30cm wide; to 15cm tall.

A wild plant discovered at Lettergesh, County Galway, Ireland, and propagated by Susie and Alan Kay. Like all Calluna it requires lime-free acid soil.

‘Saskia’

Flowers rose-pink (H7); XII-IV; urn-shaped corolla to 5.5mm long, 2.5mm across towards base; calyx lobes rose-pink, darker towards base, 4mm long; foliage darkening in winter, with bronze tinge; mid-green in summer, 7 x 1 mm, habit low-growing, spreading, 20cm tall and 35cm across (pruned) after 3 years. Distinctive flower colour.

Chance seeding in Forest Edge Nurseries found in 2007 by David Edge, exhibited by Forest Edge Nurseries at the 2012 HTA National Plant Show in Coventry.

Named after Benjamin Edge’s daughter.

‘Branka’

Spectacular red (cerise H6) buds, opening to paler cerise flowers, arranged in an erect spike; VI-VII; foliage dark green; height 25cm; spread 25cm after 3 years.

‘Branka’ is a deliberately raised selection from the heather formerly called Bruckenthalia spiculifolia, a native of eastern Europe. This clone was raised by Kurt Kramer (Edewecht, Garmany) and propagated by Heidekulturen Marohn & Häger. Erica spiculifolia is hardy but is not widely grown and deserves to be better known.

Branka is a Slavonic girl’s name.
