White-flowered C. vulgaris has been known for at least four centuries. When used as a cultivar name ‘Alba’ may cover many different clones; C. vulgaris f. alba is a better name for these plants.
It was first reported in the wild in Britain in John Gerard’s The Herball in 1597.
Named after albus = white; the flower colour.
